Being Fat and Active
Focus on performance, not body fat
Body fat comes up at every training camp I’ve ever attended. As a former fat guy, I’ve got something to say.
The first point is considering carefully who we are hanging around. Our desires are created by our social environment. Spend a lot of time with underfed folks and you’ll pick up their entire culture. Once we join the tribe, we don’t get to pick and choose the elements of the belief system. Choose peers, coaches and mentors with intent.
The second point is each of us needs to make a choice. Do we want to improve body composition or body performance?
If your primary goal is to lose fat then focus exclusively on Basic Fitness and Metabolics (both explained in Chapter One, How to Endurance).
If your training program is beyond your general capacity then you’ll find weight gain accompanies an increase in training load. The solution is to spend an extended period of time under your current capacity.
It seems counterintuitive but the path to better performance, and body composition, is to moderate what you consider “proper” training.
