The Transition To Competitive Amateur
In the spring of 2023, I attempted to make the jump from being a Developmental Athlete to training like a Competitive Amateur.
It didn’t go well.
One year later, I made the jump without problems.
The key lesson…
Let Load Be The Result, Not The Goal
The loading system I recommend is covered in my Dead Simple Loading series.
The toughest part is holding back, especially when things are going well.
Getting To The Front of the Pack
If you have a desire to compete for the win, then I put together a seminar on the lessons of the last two years.
Below, I have linked additional resources mentioned in the video.
Leveling Up
Alan’s Leveling Up Article explains the different stages of athletic development for a long-course multisport athlete.
I recommend you “hang around” at each stage to give your body time to adapt to this new level of loading.
My problem last year => as soon as I arrived at the Developmental Level, I attempted to push through to the Competitive Level. My body was not ready to make the move and things fell apart.
Using Training Peaks
In the video below, I explain basic terminology and how I plan training weeks.
The Basic Week
Each competitive level has a Basic Week associated with it.
John and I explained how to set up, and manipulate, your week depending on your goals.

Part Two - Competitive Athletes & Building A Season
Part Three - Manipulating Frequency Across Time & Goals
